Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Fred Keller (R-PA) this week sent a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to reverse course on his decision to lift sanctions on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

In the letter led by Congressman Garrett Graves (R-LA), Keller called on President Biden to reimpose the bipartisan, congressional sanctions against “all responsible parties and actors” to permanently stop completion of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

“These sanctions focused on a one-time communist intelligence officer in the former Soviet-controlled East Germany and close crony of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the letter reads. “The completion of Nord Stream 2, which was slowed during the Trump Administration, will be a gift to Putin and his efforts to increase geopolitical influence in Europe.”

On the letter, Congressman Keller also made the following statement:

“American energy should be the president’s first priority. Instead, this administration has consistently put America last, dismantling our energy infrastructure while granting its approval of pipelines abroad. President Biden needs to stand firm by the sanctions Congress imposed and take immediate action to correct course. Waiving sanctions on Nord Stream 2 is a weak political move by the current administration at the expense of American domestic energy and national security.

In May, President Biden waived the bipartisan sanctions imposed on Congress for the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline. In response, Congressman Keller last week introduced the Protecting Our Wellbeing by Expanding Russian Sanctions (POWERS) Act, legislation that would immediately reinstate the previous sanctions.
